Today, this post is for us women. I happened across an interesting article today that stated the majority of feminine products are made with GMOs and/or contain toxic chemicals. What??
I never really took that into account. So, because the internet is a mass carrier of information, I did some research.
Most feminine products are made of cellulose from rayon and cellulose pulp from wood. Those are natural products, so you’d THINK that they are safe, right? WRONG!
Think for a moment how the fibers are processed. They use chlorine and dioxin. Dioxin is a toxic chemical compound (some articles I read stated that they are related to Agent Orange). Now, think about this: your skin is your largest organ, and anything that contains GMOs, chlorine, and dioxin is going to infiltrate through your skin and tissues.
Dioxins suppress the immune system, disrupt the hormones, and may be a factor in tumor growth.
“A recently released draft report by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) labels dioxin a serious public health threat. The EPA report states there is no “safe” level of exposure to dioxin – even trace amounts are a risk as they accumulate in tissue.
And dioxin has an “extremely long half-life” in that it may remain in your body for as long as 7 to 11 years. There’s no consensus on the exact number as it may vary depending upon your percentage of body fat.” ~ (femininecare.mercola.com)
Sanitary pads are increasingly being made from petrochemicals. This means that 1) there is an increased risk of being subjected to toxic chemicals, and 2) they are not biodegradable. The toxic chemicals and synthetic materials can cause irritation, burning, and promote growth of bacteria and yeast.
There are natural ORGANIC cotton feminine products on the market. Certified organic cotton must adhere to using strictly non-GMO cotton. Yes, the products will be a bit more expensive, but they are much healthier and cleaner than the cheaper alternative. You can find organic cotton products here.
I also read that there may be some hemp feminine products available soon, I will keep you posted as I learn more about that.
This is great news, especially for those who are chemical-sensitive.
