I found this information on Monday and knew that it was important enough to be shared. Part of this article has subjects that can pertain to hemp; others are more chemical and political in nature. However, all are important to know.
Bayer, a pharmaceutical company, was founded in Germany in 1863 and was a major producer and distributor of heroin.
Its first product was salicin, a pain-killing chemical found in the bark of the willow tree. It also discovered the following drugs and chemical-based products:
Parathion and Propoxur (insecticides) – “Methyl parathion is a pesticide that is used to kill insects on crops. Usually, it is sprayed on the crops. Methyl parathion comes in two forms: a pure form of white crystals and a technical-grade solution (brownish liquid), which contains methyl parathion (80%) and inactive ingredients in a solvent. The technical-grade methyl parathion smells like rotten eggs or garlic. Methyl parathion is a manufactured chemical, so it is found in the environment only as a result of its manufacture or use. Methyl parathion has been manufactured in the United States since 1952 and has been used to kill insects on many types of crops since this time. Because methyl parathion can be dangerous to humans, the EPA has restricted how it can be used and applied. Methyl parathion must be sprayed on crops from the air or from the ground in certain ways to minimize the danger of being exposed, and only trained people are allowed to spray methyl parathion.
Methyl parathion can enter your body if you eat food or drink water containing it; if you swim, bathe, or shower in contaminated water; if you touch recently sprayed plants or soil; if you touch contaminated soil near hazardous waste sites; or if you breathe air that contains methyl parathion, such as near factories or recently sprayed farm fields (or in recent accounts of the illegal use of methyl parathion, if you breathe air or touch contaminated surfaces inside homes where methyl parathion has been used to kill insects). By any means of exposure, methyl parathion goes into your body quickly and gets into your blood. From your bloodstream, methyl parathion goes to your liver, brain, and other organs. Your liver changes some of methyl parathion to a more harmful chemical called methyl paraoxon. Both methyl parathion and methyl paraoxon can bind to enzymes of your nerves within minutes or hours.” (http://www.atsdr.cdc.gov)
The Bayer company then became part of IG Farben, a German chemical company conglomerate. During World War II, the IG Farben used slave labor in factories attached to large slave labor camps, notably the sub-camps of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp. IG Farben owned 42.5% of the company that manufactured Zyklon B, a chemical used in the gas chambers of Auschwitz and other extermination camps. After World War II, the Allies broke up IG Farben and Bayer reappeared as an individual business.
Bayer CropScience has products in crop protection and nonagricultural pest control. It also has activities in seeds and plant traits.
In 2002, Bayer AG acquired Aventis CropScience and fused it with their own agrochemicals division (Bayer Pflanzenschutz or “Crop Protection”) to form Bayer CropScience. The company is now one of the world’s leading innovative crop science companies in the areas of crop protection (i.e. pesticides), nonagricultural pest control, seeds and plant biotechnology. In addition to conventional agrochemical business, it is involved in genetic engineering of food. (wikipedia)
Aventis “crop sciences” include herbicides, fungicides, pesticides and genetically engineered food.
Now, this was very disturbing to me on many counts.
I am not saying that heroin did not have its uses, but also incorporating hemp as medicine would have been a healthy choice. Hemp is not addictive, it is an anti-inflammatory, and is not toxic.
What does hemp have to do with chemicals used at Auschwitz? As far as I know, nothing. But it is disturbing that a company that is ‘medicine’ based had a hand in thousands of un-needed deaths.
Bayer is now involved with genetically engineered crops. It is proven that GM crops are dangerous and can cause kidney and liver damage, among other dangerous health conditions.
Hemp, a highly nutritious food, can be grown without insecticides and chemicals because it is naturally insect repellent. It does not need massive amounts of fertilizer. Hemp is a natural, organic food that can act as medicine and treat or prevent some diseases and conditions that are so prevalent today – often from eating over-processed, chemical-laden foods or from being exposed to environmental toxins. Many chemical medications are over-prescribed; often, medical symptoms are treated with chemical drugs, instead of looking at the CAUSE (which is sometimes simply poor nutritional habits).
We must continue to talk, to educate, to help people understand that hemp is natural, it is healthy, and it is sometimes a better alternative than chemical medications. Nutrition must be taken into account – proper nutrition, with hemp incorporated into the diet, is one of the best medicines around.
